A tiny team making worldbuilding fun and reliable

Kanka was born out of a frustration with worldbuilding and session notes scattered around in various tools, and the difficulty of easily sharing that content with players. Today, Kanka is a small group of friends spread around the world focused on building the best tools for those original needs.

I started Kanka because I got tired of spending half my worldbuilding time updating wiki software and the other half actually creating. Seven years later, I'm still here, still shipping, still obsessed with getting the balance right between depth and simplicity. Good tools don't need to do everything, just the things that matter, and they need to do them well.

I build Kanka with technology that isn't shiny, but that I know works and won't wake me up at 3am because something broke. I spend the rest of my time staying active, reading, raising a toddler, and dreaming up worlds."

I think personally interesting problems that serve real users stick with you longer than obligation ever will. I want Kanka around in 10 years. That means shipping carefully and with attention to detail, and keeping technical debt from sucking the passion out of it. Some days that's harder than others.

Will only play as a Fighter

I didn't come to Kanka from worldbuilding. I came from a world of rigid processes, entitled clients, and very little sense of purpose. I saw what Jay had built, saw the potential, and talked him into turning it into our main jobs. Kanka was an opportunity, but the passion came later.

What changed me was the people. Early on I noticed something I'd never experienced professionally: users who were loyal, kind, and genuinely forgiving when things weren't perfect. Then I started discovering their creativity through our worldbuilding challenges, and honestly, I just thought it was really cool. Entire worlds with their own histories, languages, conflicts, all built with so much care. All that lives rent free in my head.

These days I handle the storytelling side of Kanka, figuring out how to explain what we do and why it matters. I think who you build for shapes everything, and we got lucky with the people who showed up.

When I'm not working, I cook with whatever my hydroponic setup decides to produce (it's getting out of hand), play too many video games, and later this year I'll be a first-time parent, which I suspect will cut into all of the above.
